KRISHI VIGYAN KENDRA-KASARAGOD

 

Kasaragod, the northernmost district of Kerala, was formed on May 24, 1984. In the east, it is sharing boundaries with Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada districts of Karnataka, the Arabian Sea in the west, and the Dakshina Kannada District of Karnataka in the north and is bounded by the Kannur district of Kerala in the south. Kasaragod is endowed with rich natural resources and noted for its majestic forts, ravishing rivers, hills, green valleys and beautiful beaches. The rich and varied cultural heritage of the district is portrayed through spectacular presentations of Theyyam, Yakshagana, Poorakkali, Kolkali and Mappilappattu. Kasaragod is unique in having seven languages spoken by the local population.Agriculture is one of the importance sources of income for the population of Kasaragod. The district mainly has three types of soil: laterite, red, and sandy soil respectively. The total cropped area is around 1.52 Lakh ha, in which majority followed a coconut and arecanut based farming system. Kasargod belongs to Agro Ecological Sub Region (ICAR) Konkan, Karnataka and Kerala Coastal plain, hot humid to perhumid eco-subregion. Apart from coconut & arecanut cashew, rubber, vegetable, paddy etc is grown major area in Kasargod.

KVK-Kasaragod is under the administrative control of ICAR-CPCRI and is established in 1993. It is situated in Chowki, about five kilometers away from Kasaragod town on NH 66 towards Mangalore. KVK-Kasaragod was bestowed with the prestigious Best Krishi Vigyan Kendra Award for the biennium 2002-2003 at National level for its contributions in the field of agriculture and allied activities rendered to the farming community through its outreach programmes. KVK offers trainings for farmers, farm women and youth in the district to bring about desirable changes in their knowledge, skills and attitudes based on felt needs and wants. Further, KVK extends training to the field level extension functionaries on recent advances in agriculture and allied sectors so as to ensure proper, timely and quick diffusion of technologies for sustainable production and productivity. The mandatory activities of KVK’s such as On Farm Testing of technologies (OFT), Front Line Demonstrations (FLD) and Transfer of Technology activities. KVK-Kasaragod is functioning for the greater cause of overall development of the farming community of the district since its inception in 1993.
